Waterproofing of terraces and covering with tiles

The waterproofing layer of terraces that will be covered with tiles should not only be compatible with the tile adhesive, but also present elasticity, good adhesion to the substrate, as well as credibility and durability, since its future repair, due to its position, can be expensive and time-consuming.

The application of AQUAMAT-FLEX, flexible cement-based brushable sealing slurry, locally reinforced with 10cm wide polyester cloth tape or fibreglass mesh tape, covers all the above requirements. Its application on terraces creates a strong and continuous flexible waterproofing coating, with excellent bonding and durability, which successfully follows expansion and contraction of the terrace.
It is an ideal solution when waterproofing is combined with the fixing of ceramic tiles as a final coat.

Substrate preparation

  1. Surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned from any loose particles, grease, dust etc.

  2. Any necessary repairs or alterations to the gradient are carried out using DUROCRET or a strong cement mortar (cement:sand = 1:2 to 1:3), reinforced by the addition of ADIPLAST polymer latex. Where fast work is required, RAPICRET, fast-setting patching mortar may be used instead.
It is recommended that bonding of the cement mortar to the substrate is reinforced by applying a bonding layer to which ADIPLAST is also added (cement : sand : ADIPLAST : water = 1 : 1 : 0,5 : 0,5 by volume).

  3. The substrate is thoroughly dampened, without leaving any water puddles.

Application of AQUAMAT-FLEX

  1. The content of the 25 kg bag (component A) of AQUAMAT-FLEX is added into the 8 kg of liquid (component B) under continuous stirring, until a uniform viscous mixture is formed, suitable for brush application. A low-revolution (300 rpm) mixer may be used for mixing.

  2. Longwise the joints of the terrace with vertical elements (e.g. breast walls, staircase endings, ventilation pipes and chimneys, drain pipes etc.), as well as along cracks and expansion joints, a 15cm wide layer of AQUAMAT-FLEX is applied and, while it is still fresh, it is reinforced with a 10 cm wide polyester cloth tape or fibreglass mesh tape. If necessary, one more layer of AQUAMAT-FLEX is locally applied in order to better integrate the reinforcement into the waterproofing layer.

  3. After drying of this layer, 2 more layers of AQUAMAT-FLEX are applied over the entire roof surface, letting the first layer dry before applying the second. The thickness of each layer should not exceed 1 mm, in order to avoid any cracking. The waterproofing should be extended at least 15-20 cm up to any vertical surfaces (parapet, stairwell termination etc), in order to form a watertight basin.
    AQUAMAT- FLEX consumption: 2 kg/m².

Tile fixing
The tiles are fixed with Isomat® AK-ELASTIC, 2-component elastic tile adhesive, or with a tile adhesive elastified by the addition of ADIFLEX-B elastifying agent.
The tiles are grouted with MULTIFILL, improved by the addition of DS-99 polymer latex.

  • Alternatively for this application, AQUAMAT-ELASTIC can be used instead of AQUAMAT-FLEX.
  • Temperature during application should be at least +5oC.
  • The freshly rendered surface must be protected from high temperatures, rain and frost.
  • Consult the instructions for safe use and precautions written on the packaging.
